Torrent Trackside’s business started in
Rugeley, Staffordshire, in 1973 as a
small tool hire company and its initial
involvement in the rail industry commenced in
1995 when the company purchased its first
rail specific plant.
Rail activities expanded quickly and in 1997
Vp plc (then Vibroplant plc) purchased the
company and embarked on a major development
programme to make Torrent the only dedicated
rail portable plant hirer with a national depot
network. Soon afterwards, the company moved
to its existing head office in Lichfield and now
operates from depots in Bolton, Bristol, Canning
Town, Glasgow, Harlow, Lichfield and Rotherham
providing true national coverage.
Further expansion of the business over the
last 12 months has driven the need for Torrent
to expand its geographical footprint across the
UK and also look at new, larger facilities to
replace some of the existing depots. In the
coming weeks, Torrent will move from its
current location at Harlow to a larger facility in
Tottenham bringing the company closer to its
customer base in London.
Torrent is also moving from its current
Rotherham site to a new 13,000 sq ft facility
to support the incredible expansion seen in
the area. Further expansion of the depot
network is planned before the end of 2011 via
locations in Carlisle and Durham. Both these
facilities will be shared with Vp plc sister
business Hire Station and other locations are
currently being reviewed by the business.
